PNG or JPG?
| PNG | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless | Lossy (adjustable) |
| Text and lines | Perfectly crisp | Slight halo at low quality |
| Scanned photos | Very large files | Much smaller |
| Transparency | Yes | No |
Transparent background, explained
Most PDFs have no painted background — the white is just “paper”. With transparency on, those areas stay see-through. PDFs that draw a white rectangle behind everything (common in exports from Word or PowerPoint) will still come out white.
Questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. pdf.js, the PDF engine used by Firefox, runs inside this page and draws each page on a canvas in your browser. The file never leaves your device.
What DPI should I choose?
150 DPI for sharing and reading on screens, 200 for crisp text, 300 for printing at actual size. 600 is for archiving and is capped by the browser’s canvas limit on large pages.
Is there a size limit?
There is no upload limit because nothing is uploaded. Each rendered page is capped at 16 megapixels (the iPhone Safari canvas limit) — an A4 page at 300 DPI is 8.7 MP, so it fits; at 600 DPI the page is automatically rendered at about 406 DPI and the result tells you so.
Why are PNGs so much bigger than JPGs?
Lossless compression can’t discard detail. Text pages compress well; scanned photos don’t. Use PDF to JPG for scans.
